Stevie Wonder is against Stand Your Ground law, and has announced that he is not ready to perform in states that uphold such a law. His fans in Florida will miss his shows… for a good reason according to Stevie Wonder.
“I decided today that until the Stand Your Ground law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again,” Stevie said, reported by Hollywood reporter. “As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world.”
He is pledging to boycott all the shows in the states and countries that have instituted the law. Stand Your Ground law states that a person can use force in self-defense when there is believe he is under unlawful attack without having to retreat. The law was partly to blame in George Zimmerman acquittal, according to The Atlantic‘s Ta-Nehisi Coates.
“The truth is that — for those of you who’ve lost in the battle for justice, wherever that fits in any part of the world — we can’t bring them back,” he said. “What we can do is we can let our voices be heard. And we can vote in our various countries throughout the world for change and equality for everybody. That’s what I know we can do.”
